Infants love to insert things inside their mouth and may get choked on food, coins and toys. You don’t need to panic. You can try different maneuvers to extricate the unknown object and aid your baby breathe freely again.
If the baby is conscious and may seem to show good development, do not try to interrupt with the baby’s coughing. Put your baby in a sitting position to cough out the object. Interrupt only if your infant has a weak cough and difficulties in breathing. Place your right arm on your thigh, and then put your baby on your right arm. Be sure that your baby’s head is lower than her or his body and must be at a 45 degree angle within your body. Hold your infant’s jaw between your index finger and thumb and give a 5 firm blows to your baby’s shoulder blades.
Turn your baby around and then use your one hand to help your baby’s head and neck. Place your 2 fingers on your baby’s chest, just beneath the nipples and push about an inch deep. Give at least 5 consecutive chest nudges. You need to alternate between the 5 back blows and 5 chest nudges until the object is dislodged.
In case your baby doesn’t breath, cover the mouth with your mouth and give your baby 2 gentle slow rescue breaths. If the chest doesn’t rise up, give a back blow and chest nudges again. If you notice the object in the mouth, use your one hand to hold your baby’s tongue and jaw then lift the jaw and use your other hand to dislodge the object and help your choking baby.
